CUT and Not Gone Not Forgotten

Cut and the accompanying moving image work, Not Gone Not Forgotten were made in response to research material from the Hybrid Bodies Heart Project. Organ transplant raises many intimate questions about ‘fitting in’, from the question of whether the recipient’s body will accept the new organ to questions donor families have about whether they would like the recipient and how they would feel if they didn’t. Enlarged from small collages made from magazine cuttings, the seven still photos respond to the experience of organ transplantation by literally cutting together or colliding fragments of two domestic scenarios. The grain of the image is deliberately visible in these enlargements, drawing attention to the materiality of the process.

Not Gone, Not Forgotten is a two screen video work that takes the accidental intimacy of organ transplantation literally by visually cutting together or colliding images of two families. Two identical monitors are hung low (knee to waist height) at right angles to one another in a corner. On the right side we see an individual in her/his living room silently gesticulating. These tiny gestures set up a series of silent dialogue with a part of the same individual, appearing randomly in the life of another family on the left hand monitor. The work plays on a continuous loop, cycling through five different sets of people interspersed with quotes from donor families.
