Leaves, embroidery thread, aluminium, sizes variable, spines approx. 80cm long.

 

In autumn 2025 I collected and dried leaves and began to embroider them in an attempt to establish tactile way to connect with elements of the natural world. The first 3 works in this series are reminiscent of spines. I have an auto immune disease that has caused deterioration of my spine, which at the time of creating this work was very present. Two other works are reminiscent of lungs, for a friend who has cancer. The drawn out and delicate process of creating these works became an offering of hope for repair – of bodies, and of the fast-disappearing forests of the world. The other works in the series feature leaves in the shape of a shield against an aluminium scaffold, suggesting mechanisms of defence and protection.
